Huascaran2001 Expedition
General Ecology Inc. wishes the Huascaran2001 Expedition
well knowing our donation of First Need Deluxe® portable water
purifiers will take care of the team's need for pure drinking water.
In May 2001 the Expedition's team of high altitude mountaineers
and medical scientists will go to Peru's highest peak, Huascaran
Sur (6,768 meters) to climb and conduct a number of scientific studies
while at altitude. We were pleased to fulfill the Expedition team's
request for First Need Deluxe portable water purifiers and General
Ecology, Inc. is proud to support such a worthwhile endeavor.
The climbers will attempt to establish a new route on the majestic
North Face of the highest peak in Peru. AT 22.205 feet, Huascaran
Sur is the second highest peak in North and South America. The Expedition
led by Swiss alpinist Chris Binggeli, will make its attempt in a
lightweight, "alpine-style". The new route on the 4,545
feet (1500m) high mixed rock and ice face towering above the Quebrada
de Llanganuco valley in the Cordillera Blanca region is 70º
to 90º with an expected difficulty of V+ based on earlier routes.
The Expedition will be participating in a scientific research project
in collaboration with Uniformed Services University and National
Institute of Mental Health. Maj. Christian Macedonia M.D. (US Army),
leader of the 1999 "Everest Extreme Expedition" medical
science team, along with Col. Joseph Palma M.D. (US Air Force) will
lead the research efforts during their Expedition. Using state of
the art MicroArray analysis to determine gene expression, the researchers
will be able to examine the differences in the climbers' genes as
they ascend to different altitudes during the Expedition. This type
of study will be the first of its kind and should provide useful
data for understanding the cellular changes of climbers before,
during and after a climb to high altitude.
The team members of Huascaran2001 Expedition believe in giving something
back to the people of Peru for allowing them to visit and climb
in their country. The team will accomplish this by providing medical
services and educational materials to the villages surrounding the
Huascaran.
General Ecology, Inc. wishes the Huascaran2001 Expedition
good luck and looks forward to hearing about their adventures. Check
back for updates!
